  1. If the children are going to a new school, take them there as soon as possible to register and to walk around. Schools may be open even during school breaks, but without teachers or students. Look into other daytime activities for the kids if you are moving over a school break (unless they’re big enough to help).
  2. Consider hiring a cleaning service to clean your old house after your things are gone. You’ll be more focused on all the excitement of your new place – naturally!
  3. Whenever possible, meet your new neighbors. They’ll be a great source for the best local supermarket, parks and paths, pizza joint … And you may be calling for takeout pretty often in the first few weeks. Neighbours often have interesting history on your property, too.
  4. When packing, ALWAYS label your boxes by room, and NEVER label a box “miscellaneous.” If you’ve packed something you may need in the first day or two (like important documents or an alarm clock!), write that on the box as well.
  5. Pack your cleaning supplies, broom, vacuum cleaner, and stereo last – you’ll appreciate having them at the old place, and they’ll be the first things off the truck at the new place. Next are your dishes (or paper plates and cups), beds, and bedding.
  6. As far in advance as possible, get the cable, electric, water, gas and telephone service started at the new home in your name. You’ll definitely appreciate having the climate controls working on your first day there, no matter the time of year.

Enjoy your first evening in your new home with a makeshift picnic among the boxes. It’s a great way to start making memories!
