Do you have a large blank wall staring you in the face? Here’s one approach. This very pretty installation is a great way to make a big visual impact. My friend Kaisha put together this creative ensemble, proving style doesn’t always require heaps of cash. A little ingenuity and a splash of paint can go a long way!

Start with a mirror in a decently thick frame. Next, source some frames with interesting silhouettes. Look through your stored boxes for picture frames that aren’t in use. Shop the bargain bin at your fave decor store, or better yet, support a local thrift shop or second-hand store.

Now it’s time for a bit of paint. Some frames may be lovely as they are – don’t be afraid to show some ‘character’! Simpler frames might need some fresh colour. Craft paints or leftover wall paints are easy to use and often on hand. Ask friends and family what they have as well – you’ll only need a little bit! A light sanding, thorough rinse and air-dry beforehand will help the paint stick.

This could also be done with all frames in natural wood – but different species and vintages of wood. You’ll get a warm, organic feel with even less effort!

Arrange the frames on the floor to get a sense of the layout. Which colours or styles do you want to put where? Once you have a layout figured, hang the mirror. Centre it on the wall, so that the centre is at your eye level. If you are extremely tall or tall-challenged, aim for a centre height of 5’4″ (162cm) so that the average individual will be able to use the mirror. Add more frames one at a time. Done!

The best news? This installation is very staging-friendly! As stagers we often ask clients to remove personal photos from their walls, as they are a distraction to potential buyers. This installation highlights the frames, without the need for something inside them. Perfect for selling or dwelling!
